After the Resurrection!

After the Resurrection!

The celebration of the Resurrection has come and gone. Across this nation and throughout the world, churches were filled with people celebrating the glorious resurrection of Jesus the Christ.  Congregations joined in with the choirs in festive songs of victory.  Pastors, who preached Jesus down off the cross on Friday, preached Jesus out of the grave on Sunday!  Worship Services concluded on a high note with the singing of DeAndre Patterson’s “He’s Alive”; Hearts soar and joy fills the souls of the faithful who rejoiced in Christ’s triumph over sin and death.  Easter dinners were devoured; children searched enthusiastically for Easter eggs; and what’s left of their baskets are some straw, and some candy that even the adults didn’t particularly want.

Then came the morning after. The emotional charge of Resurrection Sunday had left our hearts. Our soul, which had soared upward into the heavens on the wings of the truth of the resurrection, was brought earthward and burdened with the cares of today.

It can become so easy to treat Christ as though His resurrection from the dead is the climax of an Easter play. When the music stops and the church service ends we applaud His performance and leave, remembering that we can catch the same show again next year.

God knew how difficult it would be for our finite minds to apprehend the truth of Jesus’ resurrection. He even sent an angel to the tomb to redirect the women’s thoughts from doubt and pain to faith and joy. “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!” (Luke 24:5-6)

God has raised Jesus from the dead! And through Christ’s death and resurrection, God raised up His church to witness to the Almighty power of God and to testify that “The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” (Luke 24:46-47).

After Jesus was resurrected, he met the eleven disciples in Galilee and His instructions to His disciples were to go out into the world and spread the good news of salvation:

Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

These instructions have been, and continue to be, the basis of the Christian emphasis on sharing the Gospel with the world through evangelism!

As members of the church of the living Christ we (the faithful) must relinquish all claims to this world and be subject to the instructions of the living Lord.

Jesus expects His followers to imitate Him in the world every day and join together each week to celebrate the Lamb that was slain for the sins of the world, look ahead to the Church Triumphant, and be strengthened by the truth that Jesus is alive.  For He is Risen Indeed!
